Tempus, a startup that is fighting cancer, wants to assist doctors at Chicago University with data, which will help them provide better care to breast cancer patients. Tempus was founded by Groupon founder Eric Lefkofsky. Tempus which is based in Chicago announced the partnership with the University of Chicago’s School of Medicine on March 16, 2017. Tempus will provide University of Chicago cancer experts with molecular sequencing and analysis data. The data will aid the oncologists in creating bespoke treatment plans for individual patients. Tempus will also analyze data from over 1000 cancer patients to unearth hidden patterns and predict patient’s responses to various treatments. The main aim of this partnership is to improve patient outcomes.
Dr. Olopade Olufunmilayo, the dean of global health and a professor in human genetics and medicine, said that even though breast cancer is common worldwide there is a dearth of data on the millions of patients who have conquered the disease. He says this situation has led to physicians to recommend treatments without taking advantage of patients’ genetic information. Dr. Olufunmilayo reiterated University of Chicago’s support for assisting Tempus in their goal of creating the largest clinically annotated dataset on breast cancer.
