On 10th July 2017, Sujit Choudhry of Center for Constitutional Transitions was joined by other prominent figures in Kiev to discuss Ukraine’s semi-presidential system the constitutional challenges facing the system. The event was hosted by the Ukrainian think tanks including the International Institute for Democracy, Center for Policy and Legal Reform and other intergovernmental organizations that support sustainable democracy.
In his speech during the fete, Mr. Choudhry candidly said it was his privilege to discuss executive powers in such a big event. He also said that Ukraine is not fully democratized due to the concentration of powers of the presidency, the electoral, legislative system as well as the weak political party system which have contributed to the country’s constitutional and political instability. He also went ahead and touched on the recent involvement of the transitional democracies in decisions about constitutional making. Other key leaders in attendance were: Thomas Sidelius, Sumit Bisarya, Sergyi Holovatyi, Vladimir Vasilenko, Viktor Musiaka, Ihor Koliushko, to name but a few. The personalities also possess vast knowledge on the topic, and their contributions were necessary for ensuring that the country is on the right track towards the achievement of the intended democratic system.
