Sujit Choudhry

Kiev, Ukraine was the site of a workshop on constitutional law focused on the country of Ukraine and it’s fight to become democratic. While America was worried about the 2016 election, America stood strong and acknowledge a transition of power, thanks to the framework of the United States Constitution. The U.S. Constitution has become one of the finest documents ever written and has become the map for other countries to follow, who are seeking to become democratic.

Sujit Choudhry was one of the constitutional experts who attended the workshop. The workshop took place two weeks ago and the topic of the evening was the system of government that Ukraine currently has and the trouble it faces with constitutional challenges. The discussion among the scholars was over ways to improve the government processes in the Ukraine. The country of Ukraine has struggled to find equal footing with its government. The Ukraine thinktank, Center of Policy and Legal Reform hosted the workshop along with support from International Idea, who promotes sustainable democracy across the globe. A handful of legal topics were discussed, but more than anything, the instability of democratizing the Ukraine was a key discussion point. The Ukraine government does not have balanced system of checks and balances, so policies are difficult to put in place. Sujit Choudhry is the founder of the Center for Constitutional Transitions, which is currently researching constitutional instability in Ukraine. Ever since the fall of Communism, Ukraine has failed to implement a democratic government. This crisis has made the legislature weak and allowed the president to have too much power.
